[DISC Wizard Q&A] How To Increase Your Candidate Pool

Dear DISC Wizard,

I have used your hiring system in the past and it’s great. Unfortunately, I’m now faced with the situation where I can’t find enough qualified candidates to even put through the assessment process. Any suggestions?

Dear Michael,

What you are facing is becoming more and more common these days, especially in non-glamorous, unskilled labor industries such as yours. Unfortunately, LinkedIn and recruiters aren’t going to be able to help us fill the unskilled jobs in our plants and factories.

However, there are creative strategies that some of my clients are utilizing that are getting good results. One of these is a referral program. Even if you have one already, you must make sure it is known, relevant and compelling to your workforce.

By known I mean, do your customers, vendors, as well as employees, know you are actively looking to fill positions? Don’t assume they know. Ask them specifically for referrals.

For ways to make it relevant and compelling, I am going to send you a copy of my “Little Red Book of Hiring & Firing” which contains guidelines for an effective referral program, as well as some other outside-the-box recruiting strategies.
